In The Loop DVD Review By John C.
*** (out of 4)
In The Loop is a political satire, with the distinct British tone of being absurd and hilarious mostly through the use of clever and cheeky dialogue. The somewhat confusing story line almost plays like a subplot to the hilarious banter between the characters. This doesn’t really feel like a story-driven movie, and the dialogue is so outrageous that it almost feels improvised. It feels like the story is just there as an afterthought to keep the actors grounded. But I’m not necessarily saying that’s a bad thing.
The satire is smart and clever, but the funniest lines are due to creative uses of swear words. While I definitely was not as blown away by this film as some other people were, I still think it’s well worth seeing. After all, it does supply some huge laughs, and makes us think about all that goes on behind the political scene.
The DVD includes audio commentary, deleted scenes and cast and crew interviews.

In The Loop is a political satire that looks at the mis-communication, and spin doctors in the high up levels of British and American parliaments. When Simon Foster, a mid-level minister played by Tom Hollander, says in an interview that a USA war in the middle East is 'unforeseeable', his people go crazy. He is almost immediately invited to the United States to meet with the 'Future Planning Comity', which quickly launches him into the game of chess that is politics.
Peter Capaldi stars as Malcolm Tucker, his spokesman who has a way with swear words. He is trying to quickly have Foster backtrack on his words, before everything gets out of hand. Some of the funniest exchanges in this movie are between Peter Capaldi and James Gandolfini, who plays Lt. Gen. George Miller of the USA, as they try to out-insult each other... Chris Addison is Toby White, Simon Foster's new go-between for the press, who is not all that great at not leaking things to the press, and the right thing to say or do... While the story of this film is essentially just watching everyone deal with the fact that a minister said that war was 'unforeseeable' in an interview, it is a fun and interesting film to watch. Everyone is so uptight here, and they often deal with it by 'changing' the truth.
I would definitely recommend In The Loop, but it is what is oddly an overall slow moving film storywise, but very fast on the dialogue side. You have to be paying attention to this one. The dialogue is where it counts. As a very character driven film, all of the actors were impeccably cast, which is what made the film so much fun for me to watch. I like a film like this sometimes. Watch the trailer here.
