Looks like the HFPA went with the obvious. The Hangover for Comedy/Musical, and Avatar for Best Picture - Drama. Shows how much these choices are influenced by the public. But I’m very glad that both Up and Crazy Heart won both of their awards. Very much deserved. Up in the Air was one of the best screenplays of 2009, so I’m really glad that it was recognized. Lots of good choices, tons of very good films recognized, but they still went with the most popular, obvious choices in the biggest categories. Should be interesting to see if Avatar wins the at least a dozen Oscars I’m predicting it will take home.

Here's what I think. I really would have preferred to have seen (500) Days of Summer take Best Comedy or Musical over The Hangover, and either Up in the Air, or The Hurt Locker take Best Drama over Avatar, but alas, that did not happen. Was kind of surprised to see James Cameron take home Best Director over Kathryn Bigelow. But then not really at all to see Robert Downey Jr. take Best Actor in a Comedy or Musical over Matt Damon - I was guessing between the two.
Still, I was happy with a lot of the choices revealed tonight. The Up in the Air script won over what I had guessed - The Hurt Locker - but I was quite happily surprised with that. I was so glad to see The Weary Kind win for Best Song, and extremely pleased to see Michael Giacchino take home Best Score for Up - one of the most deserving awards of the night, along with Up winning for Best Animated. Hopefully the animated tour-de-force will be at least nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars.
Next, it will be interesting to see how Michael Giacchino fares come the Grammy winner announcements, January 31st, 2010. He is nominated there four times, once for Star Trek, and three times for Up (the two extras for Up are for best arrangement of a piece composed for media, and best individual composition).
